A peaceful water reservoir in Herkimer is being replenished once again at a consistent rate after intense repair work on a burst water main, a turning point in a recent emergency to obtain water in the village.
A mud slide along Route 28 on April 4 severely impacted the village’s main water main, leading to a state of emergency and leaving several families dependent on well water.
Repairs were completed on April 17 when water was restored to the reservoir via a 19-mile pipe. Now, as water fills the reservoir, authorities are hopeful that the system can once again provide its service to the local community
Citizens and authorities credit a sense of community for getting through the ordeal. “Thank you to the people in our wonderful community for coming together to help one another during this trying time” Mayor Dana Sherry said in a statement.
When the reservoir is filled up to its limit, its surface, free and unobstructed, tells the story of Herkimer’s determination. Beyond serving as a water supply, the repaired reservoir now bears witness to the determination of people to rise above nature’s challenge.
