New Psychology Major Announced

Herkimer College is now offering a new Psychology program. Enrollment for this program is currently open for registration, and students can switch their majors or new students can apply for the fall 2021 semester.

“The faculty and administration has been developing the psychology major for several years. We have had many students ask for it along the way and we are very excited to finally offer it,” says Social Science Professor Jane Verri.

Verri’s goals for the program include providing students with a key understanding of how people think and behave, “which is important in any social situation.”

“If you want to improve your understanding of other people and yourself, learn about mental processes, human development and well-being, as well ethical and social responsibility in a diverse world and become a person that will be more open-minded and able to communicate and critically think about these topics, then this is the program for you.” Verri emphasizes that the college has agreements to earn a bachelor’s degree in psychology with SUNY Plattsburgh and SUNY Polytechnic Institute.

Students within Herkimer’s Social Science and General Studies majors have already begun to switch into the new program. Verri mentions that this program can be taken completely online, in-person, or a mix of both.
