The 2026 Herkimer County Community College Career Fair offered students, alumni, and local job seekers a valuable look at opportunities across the region. The event was held at the Robert McLaughlin College Center and brought together more than 50 employers creating a busy atmosphere filled with resumes, professional attire, and hopeful conversations.
Recruiters from several organizations shared clear insights into the qualities they value most in candidates. At the Sentinel Media Co. table, a genuine passion for the work stood out as essential for anyone hoping to break into media. The focus was on people who truly enjoy storytelling and content creation rather than simply seeking any available position.
Public safety roles also drew significant interest. The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office emphasized consistency and determination, along with strong attention to detail, punctuality, and good communication skills. Nearby, the Herkimer County Sheriff’s Office highlighted care, passion, commitment, and a willingness to learn. Recruiters noted that successful experience and an openness to growth make strong impressions.
At GPO Federal Credit Union, similar themes emerged. Recruiters looked for care, passion, commitment, and that same readiness to learn from candidates with a proven track record in previous roles.
The Resource Center for Independent Living placed special importance on commitment to its mission of supporting independent living for people with disabilities. Strong morals, consistent attendance, and a sincere dedication to helping others were frequently mentioned as key traits.
Across the fair, several qualities appeared repeatedly: alertness, attention to detail, punctuality, commitment, and clear communication. Employers repeatedly stressed that they are hiring for character and reliability as much as for specific skills.
The event showcased the range of career paths available locally, from media and finance to law enforcement and human services. For current students exploring options, recent graduates entering the workforce, or community members considering a change. The fair demonstrated the importance of preparation and authenticity when connecting with employers.
Herkimer County Community College’s Career Services team once again provided a well-organized opportunity for local talent to meet local employers. Those who attended left with a better understanding of what many organizations are seeking: dedicated individuals who show up ready to contribute and grow.
