Background on Neth Nahara case: Authorities arrested Neth Nahara in August 2023 at her home in Luanda, Angola’s capital, after she broadcast a live TikTok video criticizing President Lourenço. The other four activists were arrested on September 16, 2023, in Luanda, ahead of a planned protest in solidarity with motorcycle taxi drivers.
While in detention, authorities denied critical healthcare to some of the five detainees, including urgent surgery and daily HIV medication. Their arrests and treatment during detention were all violations of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Good News: On December 25, 2024, Angola’s President João Lourenço announced pardons for social media influencer Ana da Silva Miguel and other activists Adolfo Campos, Hermenegildo Victor José (known as Gildo das Ruas), Gilson Moreira (known as Tanaice Neutro), and Abraão Pedro Santos (known as Pensador).
