The Herkimer College Honors Program:  Where Students Make a Difference!

The Herkimer College Honors Program provides students with a GPA of 3.5 or higher the opportunity to acquire a variety of skills outside of the classroom through experiential learning.  Interpersonal communication, self-direction, leadership, emotional intelligence—these are all important to a marketable employee and moreover a productive member of society.  The Honors Program helps students actively develop these skills as they complete the 3 required courses within the program.

The following students completed their HP302 projects this semester:

Jessica Neely

Jessica’s project brought a voice to individuals in her local area through imagery.  Jessica’s project, entitled “Legacy on Lease: A Visual Storytelling Series on Flatbush Culture, Resilience, and Gentrification”, aimed to “explore the cultural richness, resilience, and transformation of a neighborhood deeply rooted in Caribbean-American identity, now facing the pressures of gentrification.”

Lillian Norris

Lillian completed a project involving art and theater, creating a complete full-coverage costume designed for character use in a theatrical production.  Lillian utilized mainly recycled materials to create this costume and worked under the guidance of Prof. Wrinn.  This project served to strengthen Lillian’s skills in art and design and will add to her growing portfolio as Lillian was also awarded third place nationally for a piece published in The Phaethon this semester!

Rory Kohl

Rory’s project aimed to collect donations for Mariah’s Closet, a local store whose sale of upcycled items supports mental health and wellness organizations.  Knowing that the end of semester is a great time for students and faculty/staff alike to clean out their closets, Rory took advantage of this time to make the drive most successful.  Rory was able to network with the store’s owners to determine their needs; she also worked with a designer to create an attractive and informative flyer.  Rory’s donations were well received by Mariah’s Closet, thank you to all who supported the project!
