Students Weigh in on the HCCC Experience at Accreditation Focus Group

Herkimer County Community College students were asked to give feedback on everything from advising to housing costs at a focus group held on October 21 at the Alumni Hall as part of the college’s reaccreditation process.

The session was organized for the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE), the college’s accrediting body. Faculty and staff facilitators led small table discussions while note takers recorded responses.

Karen Ayouch, dean of academic affairs and accreditation liaison officer, said the focus group is meant to bring student voices into the college’s self-study, which she is co-chairing and which is currently being written. Student surveys sent by email will also help the working groups build their sections of the report, she said.

Students at the tables described a mix of strengths and gaps.

What’s working: Students said academic advising and financial information are clear and easy to get. Many said support services are available if students seek them out. Several said professors accommodate different learning styles.

Where students want more: One student said the college lacks a biology tutor, another student said one in-person course relies almost entirely on textbook reading, leaving many classmates struggling, and that the courses they need are often only offered online. Also, club leaders said low turnout is a persistent problem and called for earlier, better-publicized announcements. Students also said they want clearer communication about program closures.

Housing and policy: Residents said they were surprised by extra fees for single rooms. One student said an electric scooter was confiscated from a dorm stairwell even though they believed it was allowed, and that no confiscation policy exists.

Highlights and advice: Students praised the nature trail, clubs, and friendships they’ve made. Esports players asked for more equipment funding, while another student asked for a more collaborative approach to campus safety.
