Students stopping by informational table

NYS Department of Civil Service Showcases Job Opportunities

The New York State Department of Civil Service is offering Herkimer College students job opportunities with 90 New York State agencies. Representatives from the New York State Department of Civil Service and the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision stopped by the RMCC upper lobby on Feb. 12 from noon to 2 p.m. to inform students about career options and state employment.

The visit to campus was aimed at connecting students with a wide range of state jobs, internships and career paths. The two representatives shared information about positions at all levels, explaining that opportunities extend beyond generic roles and include specialized fields suited to  interests and skill sets that are displayed by the student body, with an emphasis on degree related careers.

A representative from the DOCCS explained that the agency offers more career options than correctional officer positions, promoting the family feel of the organization.

Students between classes stopped by the stands to speak with recruiters, some drawn by their criminal justice majors and others by employment after college. Arianna Kush, a student who visited the tables, reacted to the starting salaries discussed by recruiters, saying, “I don’t know what I would do with all that money.”

The two tables set up in the lobby outlined internships, hiring information and application steps. They provided QR codes to link students directly to state employment websites and emphasized to non local students that many positions do not require New York residency.

State representatives encourage students to explore civil service employment as a career path, urging interested students to review available positions frequently to see any updates online and to consider applying.
