Drag Show Preview

On May 2nd 2026, Herkimer County Community College is hosting its very own drag show.     The show will be from 6-8:30pm in RMCC 247.

Dr. McLean is a member of the group Hope, which organizes events and safe spaces centering LGBTQ+ individuals. As well as a faculty member/educator here at Herkimer college.  Teaming up with the Rainbow Alliance Club, a club at HCCC, they were able to organize an event celebrating the art of drag.

With numbers of participation varying, seven students are performing at the drag show this year. McLean encourages students to come along. The turnout of the last drag show at HCCC was an enjoyable time, both for the audience and performers.

McLean states the biggest challenges that come with organizing a drag show is getting everybody on the same page and making sure everything is prepared. He voices the struggle for getting performers to sign up for the show.

“Getting the amphitheater ready for it. We have to get in there Saturday night to get all the audio stuff set up and make sure their music can play correctly,” a quote directly from Dr. McLean when asked about the struggles of hosting drag shows.

McLean voices the importance of hosting local events around the area that share pride for LGBTQ+ members. Shows like these help share support and let others know they are welcome in the community. Hosting events like the drag shows can make everyone feel supported, especially in rural towns like Herkimer.

The show is free for students at HCCC and admission for others is ten dollars or five dollars with a food donation. All proceeds from the show will be going to the Trans Continental Pipeline Charity, which raises money from transgender people who are trying to relocate themselves to friendly, more supportive locations.

It’s a great cause and will be an enjoyable show. Make sure to mark the date and come support this show right here at Herkimer Community College!
