The Herkimer Generals men’s bowling team placed third in the NJCAA Region III Bowling Championship on Saturday, Feb. 15. They came in behind Hudson Valley and SUNY Erie.
The team finished with a total score of 7,891, beating Mohawk by 22 points, with Mohawk coming in last at 7,869 points. The individual accomplishments from Darrian Gilmore and Anton Leonard in the doubles competition who achieved second place with a score of 1,596.
When interviewed about the team’s expectations going into the tournament, coach Anthony DeLuca said: “So, I would say our expectations were pretty much to be in the top half of the field. We’re a pretty young team. A lot of freshmen. A lot of those other teams we faced are a lot more sophomore-based. So, we were hoping to finish in the top half. Which we did.”
DeLuca said that he is happy with the team’s performance overall in the regional tournament, admitting that they could have done better, but he is happy with how they did. DeLuca said expectations will be a little higher next year.
Despite coming in third place, making it all the way to the regional championship is nothing short of a noteworthy accomplishment for the Herkimer Generals men’s bowling team. The team will be going to nationals on Wednesday, Feb. 26.
