School in Style: How Do You Dress Your Day?

With Herkimer being a small town in upstate New York, you wouldn’t really expect much diversity among its students. But if you walk the halls then you would see that that wasn’t the case. The student body shows distinct variations in their appearances, and today I’d like to investigate what makes these differences because there seems to be more thought put into even the lightest of outfits than one may think.

Morning Routines: How We Start Our Days

Naturally, how we wake up has a substantial impact on how we present ourselves to others during the day. For instance, if we wake up from a long night some of us might find it difficult to find the energy to dress like one may want to or even complete our usual routines if had one.

“When I get ready in the morning, I really take into account my mood,” says Sean Noel, one of the two hosts of the 2025 Herkimer Fashion show, sharing how he felt that morning and chose to express it with his outfit for the coming day.

The weather is another huge part of getting ready for a lot of students, especially when its rainy or snowy outside, making it difficult to even want to leave the house. And unlike the summer, you can’t just throw on something quick and light and must prepare for the weather to keep it from affecting you. Unless you’re one of those people who wear a sweatshirt with shorts during the winter, then kudos to you making things a little easier.

Personal presentation also could have to do with how long it would take one to get ready, as some people take the time and spend more than ten minutes choosing an outfit if they cared enough, even choosing what to wear the day or night before. While others might just grab the first thing they see and be done in under five minutes. The time that it takes being able to cut even shorter if you’re consistent with what you wear.

Campus style: How Do You Do You?

Speaking of consistency, style on campus seems to be able to be put into groups. While some might be more into the comfort aspect for the long day of academics, others might be more into a complex style personal to them. It’s interesting to see how students’ style could differ from person to person, almost like seeing their personality through their clothing.

But, some have felt a little pressured to keep their true styles to themselves. Whether it was due to financial reasons or because of societal pressures, it could be hard to really dress how you want to. Sometimes it takes a little support to help someone express themselves the way they want to through their clothing.

“You give me inspiration to dress like I want to,” said April Gooch, a few weeks ago during a conversation which was what gave me the idea for this topic in the first place.

Walking through the halls you never really realize how many people hold back because other people are holding back. It took me years to finally come out of my shell and start dressing the way I wanted to and now others are starting to feel the same way. Of course it can be a little scary going out of the norm, but it always pays off. Because there will always be someone who’d understand your style and maybe incorporate some of it into their own.

So, What’s the Deal?

Style is unique to every person, as our clothing always has a way to represent ourselves. And as we know, there is not one human on earth exactly alike as even identical twins have their differences. Whether it be because of conflict in time, or conflict of interest, its always important to be your authentic self. Because who cares what you do with your life when its your life and you only live once. Go dress how you want and live that whole Pinterest life for the fun of it.
